COVID-19 tracker app Aarogya Setu hits 5 million downloads

The Government of India launched its comprehensive COVID-19 tracking app, Aarogya Setu to fight the new coronavirus outbreak, and it is available in both Android and iOS. The app so far has gained over 5 million downloads in Play Store within 3 days of its launch. Arnab Kumar, Program Director of Frontier Technologies at NITI Aayog has tweeted saying that the app has around 8 million downloads so far. The app is also now the on the Top Free Apps and Top Health and Fitness Apps in Google PlayStore.


The government is encouraging the use of the app by several means and one among them is schools. The Central Board of education (CBSE board) has recommended all schools and institutions to urge students, teachers, parents, staff, and other relations to put in the app.

The Aarogya Setu app proactively offers information regarding risks, best practices and relevant advisories concerning the containment of COVID-19. The government's Department of Health vets all of the data. The app supports several Indian languages, including Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, and English to assist the various population across states to gain access quickly. For those concerned about their privacy, the app asks for access to Bluetooth and location, and through the registration process, the app notes, "Your data will only be shared with the govt of India. The app doesn't allow your name and number to be disclosed to the general public at large at any time."
